How do students react to this book? Before , students were curious about race, racism, the 19 th century — what was that like? And I think they saw Huck Finn — the character and the novel — as a literary history lesson. Now, the key word to me is relevance. With this particular generation of young people, everything has to be relevant to them and to their experiences. Read an interview with Robert P.
Read about The Bluest Eye. Read about And Tango Makes Three. Twain makes a society that accepts slavery seem okay. Jim is always referred to as a piece of property rather than a human being. When Aunt Sally inquires of what took her nephew so long in arriving Huck, who is pretending to be Tom, says a cylinder-head blew out. Killed a nigger.
When Jim assists the doctor in helping Jim the doctor has Jim captured while he is asleep. When they take him back to the farm where he escaped he is chained up and locked in a cell.
Instead of taking away a few of the chains, the people only agree to stop cussing at him since he did such a good job in helping. Throughout the novel Huck is supposedly learning lessons from his experiences. He sees his friend Buck get shot because of a feud between two families that has lasted for who knows how long, he witnesses the town drunk Boggs get shot by an impatient Sherburn, and most of all the true and caring side of Jim.
In the end of the novel when Huck teams up with Tom he seems to forget all of what he has learned. Huckleberry Finn contains several racist comments. During the time that Huckleberry Finn was written, African Americans did not have the freedom that they do today.
They were considered property, not citizens, which people would buy, trade, and own. Throughout Huckleberry Finn, Huck is constantly questioning the rules of his society. If students are allowed to read this, they may begin to think that it is okay to question the rules that our government have set and possibly not follow them because they think they are petty or useless.
The final reason that Huckleberry Finn should be banned from schools is that Huck teaches bad morals for the students who have to read this novel. This band was set up in a way that it seemed like a club or a gang. Students may read this and begin to think that because they do not believe what the rules of society are, that it is okay to join a club to rebel and have their own set of rules.
