Why does graffiti have a bad reputation

For example, the graffiti in many Hispanic neighbourhoods in the United States is quite elaborate and is regarded by many as a form of urban art.

The first modern graffiti writer is widely considered to be Cornbread, a high school student from Philadelphia, who in started tagging city walls to get the attention of a girl. The purpose of graffiti can be to tell a story; it can be to tell you about a specific moment in time where everything either went bad or good; it can be to tell you about people, politics, culture, art, places and society in general; it can be to express yourself anonymously, it can also be just another act of ….

Graffiti is much more common in urban areas. Some people also link graffiti to anti-social behaviour and gang culture. Graffiti often has a social or political message which it shows in pictures or words or both. Graffiti can cause damage to decorative or delicate surfaces. Affected areas may also start to feel run down and appear threatening, putting off customers and prospects.

Some graffiti can be very offensive, threatening to groups or individuals, or racially abusive. It is illegal, ugly and expensive to remove. Graffiti affects us all, it can lower property values, make people feel unsafe, reduce business patronage and encourage other types of crime. Graffiti was framed in a positive light only 11 percent of the time and in a neutral manner 39 percent of the time.

However, graffiti straddles the line between pure art and pure vandalism. Though graffiti represents a challenge to the law — and sometimes serves as social commentary about the subjectivity of laws — it can simultaneously serve a public good through its nuanced social commentary and its artistry. Defacing property with graffiti is anti-social behaviour and punishable by law.

Graffiti is seen as a form of artistic expression and can have positive outcomes for people, it is also illegal and considered vandalism. The tagging is sometimes to show where they are from, other times just a quick bomb of their name.

So they can act as a sort of map. Taggers are using graffiti for fame and notoriety. Their objective is to get their crew group name and or their individual moniker up on buildings, signs, walls, etc. The more locations that they tag their graffiti on or the more difficult the location to remove their tags, the more fame and recognition they receive.
